HOLLY'S GROUP 5 NOTES:
What do we want to accomplish? get rid of homelessness in 10 yrs.
Social media goals: raise awareness, raise money, facilitate placement, film tell own stories, get people to spread the word, connecting people with items they don't need to people who do need (resource exchange) on-line auctions (on-going small fund raiser), influencing public policy, create network of peers, get specific action to happen, do direct program work.
Strategies for social networking: videos, testimonials, fund raising (challenge with other agencies, on-line auctions, monthly support) drive people to events (blogs) (email newsletter, link to blog)Have blog with RSS feeds (really simple service syndication) come automatically with subscription) Be a credible resource. Best practices shared in network of peers in wiki. Tags enable searching for specifics. People collect things (photos, ideas, etc.) like bookmarking on-line. Social book marking you add word to a site, share with colleagues. Services, dig and del.icio.us. Common tag allows us to share. To set up dig or del.icio.us go to their site/will lead you through. How use Facebook? You have an account and can add a cause. Whe you had info to cause, goes to you contacts. Create group, ask people to join, can tell legislator we have 25,000 people we can get message to to take action. Also can ask friends to ask their friends to join. Build big base of people. Younger generation wants to discuss how they will be involved. Less control of the message, but if you are clear about message in the beginning, and have it on your blog to go back to, your supporters and their friends will personalize it and get it out to others. Complaint: Ok that's a fair question, what does the community think? Usually the constituency will have a more balanced view. If not, maybe you might want to think about it. New model of Fund Raising on Line: Widget, six degrees/ reach out to your supporters and ask them to reach out to their friends. 1) Facebook 2) Blog
Time demand/ways to make it work: Focus on what will matter to your organization. Example: invest in blog. Have conversation about is it worth it/use resources to convince your boss What is most crucial to solve homelessness: Public awareness, public policy: Use video, blog & social networking sites. If could only do one, video best. Put on u-tube with links to your website, etc. See Free Geek videos.
How know strategy works? If made video & put on U-tube, how measure effectiveness.
